Self-Assigning a Digipass Authenticator

Before you can log in to your company's system using your Digipass authenticator, OneSpan Authentication Server needs to know that you have a Digipass authenticator, and which one you have. If you have received your Digipass authenticator, you may have been instructed by your administrator to use this page to assign the Digipass authenticator to yourself.

If you can already log in to your company's system using your Digipass authenticator or if you will use Virtual Mobile Authenticator, you do not need to follow these steps.

To be able to assign yourself a Digipass authenticator, you must:

  • have a hardware Digipass authenticator in your possession, and
  • not have it assigned to you already.
Before assigning a Digipass authenticator to yourself, you need to know which authentication method you should use.

To assign a Digipass authenticator to yourself:

Response-Only

  1. From the User Self-Management Website menu, select Enable > Hardware Digipass Authenticator Self-Assignment.
  2. Enter your user name.
  3. Enter your static password.
  4. Enter the serial number.
The Digipass serial number is found on the back of the device.
  5. Use your Digipass authenticator to generate a one-time password.
  6. Enter the one-time password in the Digipass Response field.
  7. If you need to choose a PIN, enter it in the New PIN and Confirm New PIN fields. (How do I know if I need to choose a PIN?)
  8. Click Assign Authenticator.

If you are having trouble assigning a Digipass authenticator, ask your administrator to set your PIN. Once the PIN is set, try again to assign your Digipass authenticator, using the PIN set by your administrator.

Challenge/Response

  1. From the User Self-Management Website menu, select Enable > Hardware Digipass Authenticator Self-Assignment.
  2. Enter your user name.
  3. Enter your static password.
  4. Find the serial number of your Digipass authenticator (typically this is found on the back of the device itself).
  5. Enter the serial number.
The Digipass serial number is found on the back of the device.
  6. Click Assign Authenticator.
  7. Enter the challenge displayed on-screen into your Digipass authenticator.
  8. Enter the response from your Digipass authenticator in the Digipass Response field.
  9. Click Assign Authenticator.

Choosing a PIN

You will need to select a PIN:

  • if your Digipass authenticator does not have a keypad, and
  • if you are assigning a Digipass authenticator to yourself, and
  • if your administrator has not provided you with a preset PIN.

Choose your PIN while assigning yourself a Digipass authenticator.

Overview of Authentication Methods

Usually, your Digipass authenticator will only provide one method of authentication. Commonly-used methods are:

Response-Only

You request a number from your Digipass authenticator and input that number in a field or as part of your login.

Challenge/Response

A website or login dialog provides you with a challenge to type into your Digipass authenticator which displays a response keyed to that challenge. You enter this challenge into the appropriate field. If your Digipass authenticator does not have a keypad, you cannot use Challenge/Response authentication.

Virtual Mobile Authenticator

You request a one-time password by logging in as instructed by your administrator (typically with your password and/or a request keyword in the password field). When you have received the one-time password via SMS, you enter it into the appropriate field.
